What are Ulcers and how to treat them?

What are Ulcers?Ulcers are sores or lesions in the stomach or the upper part of the small intestines. They develop when the acids that digest foods damage the stomach or intestinal walls.Ulcers can be caused by a variety of conditions like stress, inappropriate diet, and un healthy lifestyle. Many ulcers are caused by a type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori. If ulcers remain untreated they will continue to get worse, so it’s important to receive a proper diagnosis and make the dietary and lifestyle changes that will allow you to heal fully.

Signs and Symptoms

1.Persistent or reoccurring stomach or abdominal pain

2.Discomfort or bloating sensation with pain

3.Nausea and Vomiting

4.Loss of appetite

5.Blood traces in vomit

6.Black stools

7.Weight loss

8.Pallor

9.Weakness due to blood loss

Follow these Steps to Treat Ulcers

Tell your doctor about your current condition.By having your history the doctor will be able to provide you the best treatment or might advise further investigations to confirm whether it is Ulcer or something else.

Diagnosis:

Following tests will be performed to diagnosis the condition

  • Ultrasound(whole abdomen)
  • MRI
  • Upper gastrointestinal (GI) x-ray series. After drinking a chalky substance called barium, you will have x-rays taken to look for signs of ulcers in your stomach.
  • Blood tests(to check growths or antibodies to H.pylori)
  • Stool tests(to confirm bleeding and presence of H.pylori)

Once the Ulcer is detected doctor may advise endoscopy to know the exact location and extent of ulcer.

 

Avoid taking NSAIDS and Aspirin:

NSAIDS and aspirin aggravates the symptoms of Ulcers.So avoid using both when you have active ulcer and there prolonged use thereafter.

Antacids to reduce the symptoms of Ulcers:

Antacids can be used to provide temporary relief of symptoms like heartburn,undigestion,vomiting and nausea but will not ultimately cure ulcers.Some Antacids are given below:

1.Calcium carbonate(most common OTC antacid)

2.Magnesium hydroxide(usually recommended by doctors)

3.Less common antacids include aluminum hydroxide

 

 2.Change your diet

1.Avoid any food that aggravates your symptoms.

2.Eat more fibre

3.Avoid spucy foods

4.Avoid Citrus fruit juice if it bothers you

5.Avoid taking coffee and carbonated drinks

 

 3.Make changes in your lifestyle

1.Stop smoking

2.Avoid alcohal

3.Eat smallers meals at regular intervals
